how to get to Richmond
Directions
Richmond a small village situated 26 kilometres outside of Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. Traffic levels are low by national and international standards, allowing this drive to be done in 20-25 minutes. It’s close enough to be easily reachable, but separate enough to retain a small country village vibe.
While public transport does exist in Tasmania, it doesn’t run at a high frequency in comparison to larger population areas. I would recommend that unless you are visiting Richmond on a coach tour, you hire a car. This will also give you the freedom to explore the vineyards and restaurants at the nearby Coal River Valley (no drink driving of course).
Directions from Hobart
Driving
If you’re close to the centre of Hobart, follow the Tasman Highway over the Tasman Bridge and continue along the highway for approximately 10 minutes. You’ll see signs pointing to a slip lane off the highway going to Richmond and Cambridge.
This joins you onto Cambridge Road. Follow this for 5 minutes (remember to slow down, there’s a 60 kilometre limit here) and then take a left opposite the petrol station onto Richmond Road (there will be signs pointing to Richmond). Follow this road through the Coal River Valley for ten minutes (or more if you stop in at the vineyards). This road takes directly into Bridge Street (the main street of Richmond).
Bus
Tassielink operates a bus service from Hobart to Richmond, taking 45 minutes – read more.
Directions from Hobart Airport
Richmond is 19 kilometres from Hobart Airport. Once you have collected your vehicle, exit the airport along Holyman Avenue and when the road ends at the major roundabout, take the second exit onto the Tasman Highway. Follow this for 2-3 minutes and take the first slip lane to the left off the highway.
This will take you to a small roundabout – take the first left. At the next roundabout take the second left and follow Cambridge Road for 5 minutes.
After the Cambridge Primary School, take a right into Richmond Road (look for the sign pointing to Richmond). Follow this road through the Coal River Valley for ten minutes (or more if you stop in at the vineyards). This road takes directly into Bridge Street (the main street of Richmond).
Directions from Launceston
If you’re driving from Launceston, Devonport or from some other part of Tasmania’s north, most of your journey south will involve travelling south along the Midlands Highway. About 15 minutes south of Oatlands, take a left onto Mud Walls Road/B21 (there will be a large sign pointing to Richmond, Campania & Colebrook). Follow this road for 40 minutes and it will finish in the centre of Richmond Village.
